7 Tricks To Boost Up Your iMac & Mac Speed

Apple has numerous series of iMac and Mac. iMac is a desktop that offers realistic visuals and a great user experience, and Mac is a laptop that has purposeful features for its users. In the latest version of iMac and Mac, M1 chip is used to provide great user experience with high graphics and memory capacity. The cameras have advanced Image Signal Processor, to capture a perfect image. The studio quality microphones and speakers deliver the perfect audio experience. Let's see how you can increase the speed of your system by turning off the unwanted services.

1. Turn off Unnecessary LogIns

It is so convenient to use the automatic login for your Mac or iMac. Even though it is a time-saving feature, it can pose a security threat to your system. The automatic logins also consume data, which can cause unnecessary loss in your data package. The apps running in the background reduce the processing speed of your Mac or iMac. So, it is advisable to disable unnecessary logins in your system.

Go to Apple Menu -> System Preferences -> Users & groups -> Login Items. Then, select the unwanted items by clicking the ‘-’ (minus) symbol to remove.

2. Turn Off Unwanted Location Accessing

The Location Services in your iMac or Mac uses GPS, Bluetooth, public Wi-Fi hotspots and cell towers to find the exact location of your device. The apps that have access to your location will get all the details about your current location and change in your location etc. To prevent these apps from running in the background, you can disable Location Services. This will speed up your system.

Go to System Preferences -> Security & Privacy -> Privacy -> Location Services. Under this menu, you will be required to enter your password then uncheck the Siri & Dictation and Maps checkboxes.

3. Turn Off Unnecessary System Services

There are some System Services in the iMac or Mac that reduces the speed of your system by running in the background. The Location-Based Suggestions service provides information about your current location, for example, you can get notifications about famous places, restaurants, etc. The Time zone adjustment is useful only when you travel to other time zones (other countries). Apple's location-based advertising will display ads appropriate to your location. Turning off these unnecessary services can save data and improve system performance.

Go to Security & Privacy -> Location Services -> Privacy. Click on the “Details” button near the system Services menu then uncheck the following checkboxes.

  • Location-based Suggestions
  • Time Zone & System Customization
  • Significant Locations
  • Location-Based Apple Ads
  • HomeKit
  • Wi-Fi Networking

then click “Done” button.

4. Turn Off Mac Analytics

The Mac Analytics collects details about your Mac or iMac to improve functionality. It collects information about all the events that occur in your system such as whether waking up your Mac or iMac was successful or not, details about app freezes and usage of third-party hardware, software and software, etc. In my opinion, I don't want to share all the information with Apple Corporation, so I've turned off Mac Analytics.

Go to Security & Privacy -> Analytics. Select “Privacy” from the top menu and uncheck all the checkboxes.

  • Share Mac Analytics
  • Share with App Developers
  • Share iCloud Analytics.

5. Turn On Limit Ad Tracking

The "Limited Ad Tracking" feature allows us to hide our device ID from advertisers. If you have this setting enabled, your device's IDFA will appears blank when tracking and you will not see targeted ads.

Go to Security & Privacy. Select Advertising from left sidebar menu and Privacy from the top bar menu. Then click on the Limit Ad Tracking Checkbox. Then click on the Reset Advertising Identifier Button.

6. Turn Off Unnecessary Notifications

A notification is a message that Android displays outside of your app UI to provide users with reminders, messages from other people, or other timely information from your app. Users can tap on the notification to open your app or perform an action directly from the notification. However, if notifications are constantly popping up on your device, it can cause irritation. Therefore, it is advisable to turn off notifications from unwanted apps. This will save your battery and increase processing speed.

Go to System Preferences -> Notifications. Under that menu turn off the unwanted app notifications

7. Turn Off Unnecessary Extensions

Like all the services mentioned above, you can also disable the unwanted extensions to speed up your Mac or iMac.

Go to System Preferences -> Extensions. Then uncheck the unwanted Extensions.

The above steps are also applicable for latest versions of iMac and Mac like iMac 24 inch (2021), MacBook Air etc.
